When refugees arrive in Europe, after a long and exhausting journey, they encounter many new difficulties. Next to cultural barriers, they often miss a meaningful work, face boredom and prejudice from the locals. Many factors prevent them from settling and developing a sense of home.
This year four girls, passionate about improving the situation of refugees in Europe, approached Enactus Maastricht. Inspired by our successful Cook & Connect project, they developed a new approach to integrate asylum seekers into society, employ them and give them a purpose. The team members themselves have an immigrant background and therefore are familiar with the culture. They themselves practice oriental dancing as a traditional Arabic art form. Together with female refugees, they create dancing workshops for students and locals in Maastricht. We consider this a great way to empower female refugees and help them to integrate into Dutch society. We are therefore pleased to call “Dance & Connect” one of our new projects.
After developing a concrete business model, the team conducted market research, that provided us with an optimistic outlook about the success of the project. Currently the Enactus members are preparing their first workshop that is due to take place after soon after the winter break.
